S-61N "Shortsky"
In 1995, Hayes expanded from conventional logging operations to include
helicopter logging with the operation of a Sikorsky 64E Skycrane. In
1996, the Company acquired the first of three Sikorsky S-61N aircraft.
The second was added in 1997, followed by the third one in 2001.
In 1996 and 1997, Hayes completed comprehensive
overhauls and rebuilds of its two S-61N helicopters, a process that
included the conversion of the two aircraft into S-61N "Shortskys".
These helicopters are custom shortened (hence the name “Shortsky”) for
heli logging to achieve increased lift capacity, greater aircraft
maneuverability and improved reliability through reduced maintenance
requirements.
Currently, the Company operates three S-61N Shortsky
helicopters with external lift capability of over 10,000 pounds per
lift. These aircraft are used for logging, fire-fighting and other
heavy lift commercial uses.
